I was recently introduced to Jo Koy's comedy specials on Netflix, and when I found out he had written a book, I rushed to buy it。 The book gives a very honest recount of Jo Koy's family life and their struggles with racism, poverty, mental illness, divorce, education, growing up, parenthood, and sibling difficulties。 It's much more than a retelling of some of his famous jokes, and anyone who has struggled to find their way in life can relate to this story。 As a recent inductee to the world of Jo I was recently introduced to Jo Koy's comedy specials on Netflix, and when I found out he had written a book, I rushed to buy it。 The book gives a very honest recount of Jo Koy's family life and their struggles with racism, poverty, mental illness, divorce, education, growing up, parenthood, and sibling difficulties。 It's much more than a retelling of some of his famous jokes, and anyone who has struggled to find their way in life can relate to this story。 As a recent inductee to the world of Jo Koy, I found it especially cool to read about life in Vegas in the 1990s, and to discover that he worked at a Borders bookstore for a while。 His story about the Pepsi he brought to his brother had me laughing so hard I was crying, and his stories about how he realized that he needed to look out for his son's interests above all else and how he found out what buying hotdogs meant for Tiffany Haddish had me crying because they were so heartfelt and sad。His tales of his first few jobs, his disdain for going to school to become a doctor, and how difficult it was to become a success in comedy is something everyone should read, especially if that person is ever considering giving up。 I loved the book and I would highly recommend it! 。。。more

A very interesting read of stand up comedian who "made it。" The story of FilAm Jo Koy provides detail and depth to many of his familiar bits。 His story is an immigrant story, an American story。 The relationships, complex and complicated, ring true and relateable。 Hard to say how much translates to non-Filipino audience, but if I had to guess, a large part of his success is because it very much does。 A very interesting read of stand up comedian who "made it。" The story of FilAm Jo Koy provides detail and depth to many of his familiar bits。 His story is an immigrant story, an American story。 The relationships, complex and complicated, ring true and relateable。 Hard to say how much translates to non-Filipino audience, but if I had to guess, a large part of his success is because it very much does。 。。。more

I LOVE Jo Koy! I love his stand up and his honesty。 Being able to relate to him on multiple levels。 I loved being able to read and learn more about his life behind the scenes and the back stories of his jokes told in his stand up。 If you love him, read this! If you don’t know him, read this。 I highly recommend this memoir! Then go watch his stand up specials on Netflix

As a stand up fan its always interesting to read about the hard work big names in comedy had to do in order to make it。

This isn't just a comedian's story, or an immigrant's story。 It's a beautiful story about growing up in a minority/immigrant family, trying so hard to be what you think is "American" and living for your dreams regardless of your situation in life。 It's about acceptance and success, something everyone can understand。 Also, I think my Mexican mom and his Filipino mom are the exact same person。 This isn't just a comedian's story, or an immigrant's story。 It's a beautiful story about growing up in a minority/immigrant family, trying so hard to be what you think is "American" and living for your dreams regardless of your situation in life。 It's about acceptance and success, something everyone can understand。 Also, I think my Mexican mom and his Filipino mom are the exact same person。 。。。more

3。5。 I love Jo Koy’s stand-up and have been on a memoir kick lately so I gave this one a go。 Jo’s upbringing, family, culture and struggle to succeed in comedy are all interesting and unique to learn about。 Of course as a fan I love hearing more stories about his mom! I enjoyed this book, but there was a good amount of repetition that kept me from loving it。

Man, I remember watching Jo perform at the Laugh Factory when I was in high school/college。 As a Filipina who loves comedy, it was so awesome to see a Pinoy on that stage。 Now, some 16 years later, Jo has reached audiences far and wide, Philippine diaspora and beyond。 He's worked his butt off and he deserves all the success he has。 Total "American Dream。" Man, I remember watching Jo perform at the Laugh Factory when I was in high school/college。 As a Filipina who loves comedy, it was so awesome to see a Pinoy on that stage。 Now, some 16 years later, Jo has reached audiences far and wide, Philippine diaspora and beyond。 He's worked his butt off and he deserves all the success he has。 Total "American Dream。" 。。。more

I enjoyed listening to the audio book format of Mixed Plate。 It was as if I was watching his shows。 Jo Koy narrated his life in a very entertaining way。 Life of an immigrant is very challenging, but his family demonstrated perseverance and hard work to survive in the states, their new home。

Okay I get it。 I’m not into that kind of comedy but I get it。 I think it could have done without it but also see how it’s just all part of being Jo Koy。 I recommend this for any Filipino-American most especially first generation kids (full-blooded or mixed) Also, profanity or not I am dying to see one of Jo Koy’s shows。The Kindle edition (and the print edition I assume) have recipes including an adobo style chicken wing I must now try。 。。。more

I think the author sums up my feelings so to quote the author。 "Well guys, here it is—my story。 A funny, sad, at times pathetic but also kick-ass tale of how a half-Filipino, half-white kid whose mom thought (and still thinks) his career goal was to become a clown became a success。 Not an overnight success, because that would have made for a really short read, but an All-American success who could give my immigrant mom the kind of life she hoped for when she came to this country, and my son the I think the author sums up my feelings so to quote the author。 "Well guys, here it is—my story。 A funny, sad, at times pathetic but also kick-ass tale of how a half-Filipino, half-white kid whose mom thought (and still thinks) his career goal was to become a clown became a success。 Not an overnight success, because that would have made for a really short read, but an All-American success who could give my immigrant mom the kind of life she hoped for when she came to this country, and my son the kind of life I wished I’d had as a kid。 " This memoir made me laugh and cry, sometimes together! 。。。more

A beautiful and hard-hitting immigrant story。 I love Jo koy's sense of humour and unconditional gratitude he has for everyone who has built him to who he is today。 I was in awe of his strength and tenacity as a person; how he braved through so many difficult moments in his life。 Jo koy's mum is an incredibly strong woman and I look up to her for her immense love for her family。 This was a beautiful story and special in its own right。 Jo is indeed a brilliant story teller。 A beautiful and hard-hitting immigrant story。 I love Jo koy's sense of humour and unconditional gratitude he has for everyone who has built him to who he is today。 I was in awe of his strength and tenacity as a person; how he braved through so many difficult moments in his life。 Jo koy's mum is an incredibly strong woman and I look up to her for her immense love for her family。 This was a beautiful story and special in its own right。 Jo is indeed a brilliant story teller。 。。。more

Another typical book written by a comedian, which chronicles Jo Koy's rise to success, and how he finally started using his experiences as a Filipino American in his comedy。I highly recommend as an audiobook, especially since he puts on a voice for his mom。 I think ANY reader can access this book and it should help people understand the unique identity of a half Filipino person living in America。 I think that's what makes this book unique。 And I really valued his story about how he realized that Another typical book written by a comedian, which chronicles Jo Koy's rise to success, and how he finally started using his experiences as a Filipino American in his comedy。I highly recommend as an audiobook, especially since he puts on a voice for his mom。 I think ANY reader can access this book and it should help people understand the unique identity of a half Filipino person living in America。 I think that's what makes this book unique。 And I really valued his story about how he realized that he can and should share his identity with his audience。 As with most comedian books, this book encompasses not only funny moments, but sad and tough ones as well。 So don't expect to laugh out loud reading or listening to this book, but just to get a better look at his life and how his experiences shaped who he is today。 。。。more

Jo Koy is funny as hell, confident as hell, and willing to hold both darkness and lightness with such ease! Totally recommend this book especially on a daily commute ♥️Appreciate him speaking on the mixed experience (from the perspective of his mixed experience) & enjoyed his line: “I finally knew what my identity was: I’m funny。”Also I appreciate the candid line : “I am not afraid or ashamed of my white family, I just felt supported and seen by my Filipino family。” (Paraphrased)。

Jo Koy's life before he was Jo Koy was a tough one with family struggles and racism in America, being half white and half Filipino。 He also sprinkles in a few of his more famous jokes with more background stories。 Most of all he describes how he overcame many obstacles and thanks those who helped him along the way。 The book had a lot of heart and was very inspiring。 Jo Koy's life before he was Jo Koy was a tough one with family struggles and racism in America, being half white and half Filipino。 He also sprinkles in a few of his more famous jokes with more background stories。 Most of all he describes how he overcame many obstacles and thanks those who helped him along the way。 The book had a lot of heart and was very inspiring。 。。。more

I absolutely loved and enjoyed this book! Of course, I'm biased, because I'm a huge Jo Koy fan。 :)I discovered Jo Koy last year, having come across a short comedy video of him。 I looked him up, watched all his clips on YouTube and his Netflix specials。 Needless to say, I was hooked and became an instant fan。 He has this ability to connect with his audience and does it in a way that makes you believe he's just talking to you, one on one, as friends。 Anyway, I was excited when I found out he wrote I absolutely loved and enjoyed this book! I've been a fan of Jo's comedy for awhile now and reading his book was a great glimpse behind the curtain。 A lot of his life he does share on the stage, but in 'Mixed Plate' he offers more than what we are used to seeing and hearing in his comedy specials and find an identifiable story involving childhood, growing up, mental health, and the need for a creative outlet, as well as the determination to try to unknown。。。 in Jo's case it was stand up comedy。Also, how can you not like a book that incl I've been a fan of Jo's comedy for awhile now and reading his book was a great glimpse behind the curtain。 A lot of his life he does share on the stage, but in 'Mixed Plate' he offers more than what we are used to seeing and hearing in his comedy specials and find an identifiable story involving childhood, growing up, mental health, and the need for a creative outlet, as well as the determination to try to unknown。。。 in Jo's case it was stand up comedy。Also, how can you not like a book that includes traditional Filipino recipes。。。 I highly recommend。 。。。more

I knew who Jo Koy was and had seen his bits on some comedy shows。 Recently I watched his own comedy specials and thought he was a hoot。 I saw he had a memoir out 。。。 I like reading biographies/autobiographies so checked it。 And it too is a hoot!Jo is a American-Filipino 。。。 his father is a white American and when was in the air force when he met Jo's mom, a Filipino, when he was stationed overseas。 The family moved around a lot as his dad got transferred。 They finally settled in Tacoma, WA, wher I knew who Jo Koy was and had seen his bits on some comedy shows。 Recently I watched his own comedy specials and thought he was a hoot。 I saw he had a memoir out 。。。 I like reading biographies/autobiographies so checked it。 And it too is a hoot!Jo is a American-Filipino 。。。 his father is a white American and when was in the air force when he met Jo's mom, a Filipino, when he was stationed overseas。 The family moved around a lot as his dad got transferred。 They finally settled in Tacoma, WA, where the family was one of the few non-white families。 To fit in, Jo used humour。 He loved watching stand-up comedians and decided that's what he wanted to do when he grew up。 His father suddenly left and Jo didn't know why and it left a void。 It made things tougher at home because his mother was now a single mom supporting four kids。 Things got better when his mother remarried and Jo got the father figure he was lacking。The family moved to Vegas when Jo was 18 and he started working on his future。 He had some success but he knew that if he was going to fulfill his dream, he had to head to LA。 So off he went。 He married, had a child and quickly divorced, though he and his ex are still good friends and he has an excellent relationship with his son, Little Joe, who is now 18。 One of the things that drove him and continues to drive him is that he doesn't want his son to have the childhood he did。 So he works hard to ensure his son has everything he needs and wants, unlike when Jo was growing up。I liked the writing style 。。。 like his comedy routines, it was funny and sarcastic。 I liked him as a person and he sounds like a nice caring fella。 But he also speaks from the heart as he talks about his childhood and the struggles and hustles to achieve his dream。 As a head's up, there is swearing。At the beginning of every chapter, there is a Filipino recipe。 At the end of the book, there are lots of pictures starting from when he was a baby right up to him and his teenage son, Little Joe。Blog review post: http://www。teenaintoronto。com/2021/05。。。 。。。more

I went into this book already being a Jo Koy fan and let's face it, that's exactly who should be reading this book。 I'm not saying you can't enjoy it if you're not already a fan, but it sure helps。 Jo Koy has a very interesting story that speaks to the true American experience。 He came to this country with his family at a young age and we learn that the struggle is truly real。 As an adult he tries to break into the comedy world and it wasn't easy for a non-white comedian。 What really impressed m I went into this book already being a Jo Koy fan and let's face it, that's exactly who should be reading this book。 I'm not saying you can't enjoy it if you're not already a fan, but it sure helps。 Jo Koy has a very interesting story that speaks to the true American experience。 He came to this country with his family at a young age and we learn that the struggle is truly real。 As an adult he tries to break into the comedy world and it wasn't easy for a non-white comedian。 What really impressed me about the book was that he didn't shy away from anything that made him look bad。 He dove head first into the less than stellar parts of his life and was fully honest about what he had done wrong and how things have changed。 He didn't have to admit any of that。 He could have glossed over it but he had the fortitude to step right up and say "yes, I did this, it was a bad move but I made amends," and that's a very brave thing to do。I got this book as an ARC from the publisher and Net Galley in exchange for an honest review and I'm so glad I did。 。。。more
